Since its founding at Immaculate Conception 30 years ago, the Young at Heart Ministry has brought a host of formation and fellowship opportunities to our senior parishioners. Members meet on the first Friday of the month, starting with Mass at 11 a.m. From there, they move into the hall for lunch and games, usually Bingo.
“The purpose of Young at Heart is to give the older parishioners a social time to be with and meet new parishioners,” says Judy Bonham, coordinator of Young at Heart. “There is faith formation, and then social time, which is necessary for all members of the parish.”
This ministry provides a great way to see friends from our parishes, as well as meet new parishioners.
“We are a family and we need to keep in touch with each other,” Judy says. “The ministry has helped us to be more aware of the other parishioners that are in our parish family. We help and encourage one another, especially those who have spouses who are ill or suffering from different illnesses. Their support and caring for each other shows the love and teachings of Jesus.”
Judy took over as coordinator of Young at Heart in 2019. She felt there was a need for someone to lead the group. She works with two other parishioners who help with the setup and cleanup of the meal. Judy believes in and is thankful for the opportunity to provide this service to them.
“It is important to keep our parishioners grounded
with all the changes happening with our parish these days,” Judy says. “The same group of people come each month. They chat and share stories and give their view on what is happening with the parishes. It is good for them to be able to still give of themselves, even when they can no longer participate in other ministries of the parish.”
Young at Heart serves those who are 55 and older. It is an opportunity to stay connected with friends and to continue being active members in the life of our parish.
“If you want to come to spend some social time, meet new people, and play some games, come to the next Young at Heart,” Judy says. “There will be signup sheets at the parishes so we can get an accurate number for food preparation. We have some yummy meals!” All are invited to participate.
