Most Catholic parishes do a great job of ministering to children, youth, people with older children, and senior citizens. One group of people that often falls into a gap is young adults. As a parish family, it’s essential that we find ways to serve all parishioners, with our young adults an important group to serve.
Ben and Taylor Witt see this gap in ministry as an opportunity — young adults need a ministry all their own, and that’s what they are building. Currently, the Young Adult Ministry meets on the second Sunday of the month from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Holy Family Parish.
Fr. Patrick Hoeft leads the group, with Ben and Taylor coordinating. The meetings consist of a Bible study following the model of FOCUS. All men and women ages 18 to 35 are welcome to attend.
“The goal is to build relationships with members of our parish through a FOCUS-orientated Bible study,” Taylor says.
For now, the couple hosts just the Bible study, but they intend to add more social and service events. Ben and Taylor believe it is important to offer community and faith-based activities for young adults. It also helps them personally to work on their faith lives.
“This opportunity allows us to further our understanding of the faith,” Taylor says. “This ministry provides a scheduled time to be set aside to both deepen the members’ faith understanding, as well as coming together as a group.”
The group started by studying Genesis and has worked through several other books of the Bible. Fr. Patrick adds extra detail, and the group also has discussion questions they work through.
Ben and Taylor would love to see more young adults join — even if you can’t attend every time, you are still welcome.
“The group is still very much in the early stages of development, and we encourage others to join us,” Ben says.
“This is a good way to spend time with parishioners similar in age covering important material and topics, as well as getting to know Fr. Patrick better,” Taylor says.
