Our summers are filled with so many fun activities and events. But here at the parish, one event that is a staple of summertime is Vacation Bible School (VBS). This event brings together not only the elementary-age children of the parish, but the middle school and high school volunteers who work with the young kids to have a fantastic week having fun and learning about the faith.
This year’s theme was Stellar: Shine Jesus’ Light. The space theme had the children blasting off into space in their “rockets” with great activities, lessons, games, videos, and snacks. The children learned a catchphrase each day that related to the theme. They also learned Bible verses, songs, and about many different saints.
Each day, the children gathered at 8:15 a.m. and start with singing and dancing. Then they go to different stations that are set up where they take part in activities. They watch a short video where they learn about a real-life family and how they can take the theme for each day and apply it to their own lives. Monday’s theme was “When life feels dark, shine Jesus’ light.” Tuesday’s theme encouraged them, “When people don’t get along, shine Jesus’ light.” Wednesday shared, “When good things happen, shine Jesus’ light.” Thursday taught them to encourage others with the theme, “When people are sad, shine Jesus’ light. And finally, Friday’s format taught them how important it is to help others with the theme, “When people need help, shine Jesus’ light.” Parents picked up the kids at noon having finished a full morning of fun and faith.
“Anytime we can fill our children with faith, it is an opportunity for all of us,” says Candace Sperati. “This is just another way that parents can bring the faith into their children’s life. Learning of the faith will never stop and we love that we can support families as they teach their children the faith. When we can incorporate so many different things including games, science, theater, and dance, that is a great thing. Anything that would touch a child’s heart, we do it. We love to provide that support to the families to grow their children in the faith.”
This event for the children would not be possible if it weren’t for the great volunteers that give of their time and talent each year.
The main helpers for VBS are the middle school and high school volunteers who are supported by the adult volunteers.
“Our older students are kind of mentors to the younger kids,” Candace says. “They come in and work with the kids. They lead them through the different stations. They guide them and encourage them. We always get great feedback from our older kids that they just love to work the young children. They step out of their normal summer routine and evangelize the younger children.”
This great event that is hosted each year is just great fun in the faith for the children of the parish. Each year, the kids just have a great time playing and learning more about our beautiful Catholic faith!
