Each of us is made in the image and likeness of God, with our own unique talents that can be used to glorify the Lord and serve His church. We all need to take the time to pray and ask the Lord the words of the church hymn, “Servant Song” — “What do you want of me, Lord?”
One important task at all parishes is to make everyone — visitors and parishioners alike, feel welcome. This is particularly important at our parish churches because we have so many visitors. We want them to know that no matter where they are from, they are welcome in our Catholic community.
Peter Walencewicz has been an usher at Ascension for nearly seven years. He especially enjoys meeting visitors from all over since he is often the first face they see. He loves spreading that genuine aloha.
“Ushering is a ministry of hospitality because you are welcoming our regular parishioners and the visitors to the house of God,” Peter says. “There’s not a better place to be.”
Jose Salinas has been an usher at Annunciation for a few years and recently took on the role of head usher. He works as a bartender and really enjoys being around people, so the Usher Ministry is a great fit.
“I love what I do,” Jose says. “I always wanted to do this ministry in the past, and I am so glad I decided to step up.”
Ushers are responsible for greeting everyone that enters church and helping with seating. They are also there to watch people entering after Mass has begun. They also dismiss people from the pews for Communion and take a count to keep track of attendance. In addition, they take the collection and bring up the gifts. When Mass has concluded, they distribute bulletins and send people away with a smile.
“We also help with other tasks the priest may need,” Jose says.
Peter is also the coordinator for the Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion, and has been involved with that ministry for about nine years. Before moving to Hawaii, Peter was an Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion in California. Both he and Jose invite all parishioners to get involved in a ministry, big or small — there’s no doubt you will grow in faith.
“Being an usher helps me grow in my faith,” Peter says. “I am helping our Lord in any way I can. Ushering brings me closer to God.”
Being a member of this parish community is such a blessing to Jose and Peter.
“Everyone should be involved in the parish because it brings you closer to God and makes you feel a real part of the parish,” Peter says.
“I really enjoy this ministry, and it’s nice to see people returning to Mass,” Jose says.
