It’s that time of year again! The Light of Christ Catholic Schools is hosting its 73rd Annual St. Mary’s Carnival on Feb. 2-4 at St. Mary’s Academy! This long-running tradition has something for everyone and we encourage everyone to get out of the cold and step into some good old-fashioned fun and fellowship. While certain parts of the carnival have evolved over the years, the major parts of this event have stayed the same.
“We look back at pictures that we have from the carnival in the ’50s and ’60s and it’s fun to see how we have upheld the traditions of this great fundraising event!” says Carrie Meyer, Ascension parishioner and volunteer coordinator for the carnival.
This event serves as one of the largest fundraisers for Light of Christ throughout the year. Admission is free, but there are tickets for the Midway games, the Kiddie Carnival games, Cake Walk, and Bingo. There are meals served each day, silent auction, live auction, and raffle. There is also a used Book Store, Baked Goods Room, Coffee & Dessert Cafe, and new this year is a jewelry and hair boutique! Over the past few years, the Saturday Night Social has become a great event with catered drinks and appetizers, fellowship, and live entertainment. This year, the local band The Rule will be playing.
“Our Midway of games is truly something special,” Carrie says. “The games and fun to be had is just so much great! The Kiddie Carnival has similar games but they are smaller or a little easier for our littler guests to enjoy. And as always, there will be goldfish for prizes as well!”
One of the great things about this event is how it brings together people from the entire community of Bismarck/Mandan, as well as everyone from all ages and stages of life.
“We have games for the kids, and delicious food for all to enjoy,” Carrie says. “The Social, auctions, and entertainment is great for the adults. And the Bingo, coffee shop, and Book Room are appealing to others. No one can truly say that there is nothing that is appealing to them!”
In addition to those who attend and support the carnival, many volunteers are needed to make this great event run smoothly. There are opportunities for all different interests — setup and cleanup, running games in the Midway, helping in the kitchen, and assisting with bingo. There are active and social volunteer positions or things for people who prefer to be more behind the scenes.
Events begin Friday afternoon at 5:30 with the Midway opening, dinner served, and the silent auction opening for the weekend. On Saturday, doors open at noon with all of the traditional fun events running through the day. Social begins at 6 p.m., with live auction following at 7:30 p.m., along with live music by The Rule. Sunday hours begin at 9 a.m., including Midway and games — the day wraps up with the raffle drawing at 2 p.m.
