Shortly after the legalization of abortion through the Roe v Wade decision in 1973, Kathy Klein’s mom, Mary, began working to save babies.
“She would pray in front of abortuaries often in the ‘70s,” Kathy says. “She was arrested many times, but that didn’t stop her. In fact, it made her more committed to the cause.”
Recognizing that every human being has an intrinsic value from the moment of his or her conception, Mary was determined to do all she could to give a voice to the voiceless, to pray for the protection of the most vulnerable, and to end the horrific genocide that is abortion.
Growing up in such a life-affirming home, Kathy says that her commitment to the pro-life cause naturally deepened through the years. Both she and her husband, Bob, have been working to end abortion for as long as they can remember. Today, they coordinate our parish’s Pro-Life Committee, and when asked how long they have been actively serving the pro-life cause, they both chuckle as they reply, “Forever!”
For the past 15 years, Bob and Kathy have focused their efforts as the heads of our parish’s Pro-Life Committee, and both of them say it continues to be a faith-building commitment for them.
“It has strengthened our convictions,” Bob says. “Being actively involved helps us to see that, yes, what we are doing is the right thing, and it is so needed.”
Kathy echoes Bob’s sentiment.
“People come up to us and say, ‘Thank you for everything you do and for keeping the parish educated on the pro-life cause,’” she says. “It is a blessing to hear those things.”
Yet, Bob and Kathy are not in it for the accolades. They would like to see the ministry grow, acknowledging that the more people who join in the effort, the more we can do for the culture of life!
Currently, the members of our Pro-Life Committee meet quarterly to plan several events throughout the year. In coordination with other parishes in the Raleigh Deanery, they plan the annual March for Life bus trip to Washington, D.C. every January. This year’s trip will take place on Jan. 19, and all are welcome. Consider joining them. Let’s make our voices heard!
In addition, the committee works with Fr. Pat to coordinate two Sundays a year — usually one in May and one during Advent — when he will bless the wombs of our pregnant parishioners during Mass. The committee also schedules hours for Our Lady of Lourdes parishioners to pray in front of the Women’s Choice of Raleigh abortuary during the annual 40 Days for Life.
“We adopt a day as a parish, and then we fill all of the hours in that day,” Kathy says. “We have never had a problem filling all of the hours. People participate.”
Twice a year, the committee hosts a baby shower wherein a bassinet is placed at the doors of the church, and they collect baby items and monetary donations which are then offered to Birth Choice to help mothers in need.
Every Sunday, adorers pray a Pro-Life Rosary at 8:30 a.m. in the adoration chapel. Then, at 11 a.m. in the church, the Pro-Life Committee coordinates the Pro-Life Rosary, ensuring there is a ministry assigned to lead it each week and join in prayer.
This vast array of events and activities only scratches the surface of the committee’s efforts. They are constantly working on promoting a culture of life throughout the year. Take a look at the bulletin week after week to stay abreast of what’s coming up in the pro-life arena here at Our Lady of Lourdes, and take the opportunity to do your part. Join them.
“Just get involved,” Bob says. “There is always something you can do. It is important to stand tough in this day and age, and the more people we have helping out, the more we can accomplish.”
