In 2019, a Pew Research Study discovered that less than one-third of self-identifying Catholics believe in the Real Presence of Jesus in the Eucharist. As a response, the Diocese of Evansville — in conjunction with the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops — launched the Eucharistic Revival at Corpus Christi last year, and parishes in the diocese are engaged in this effort.
“Jesus in the Eucharist is the ‘source and summit’ of the Catholic faith,” says Julie Bassler. “It is of paramount importance to our souls, our parish, and the world that we understand Christ’s presence — Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity — in the Eucharist.”
As we enter the second year of the revival, we focus on our parish efforts, with the goals of reinvigorated worship, personal encounter, robust formation, and sending missionaries.
This past spring, parishioners had the opportunity to participate in The Presence: The Mystery of the Eucharist after Tuesday Mass in the Parish Office. Fr. Paul has been — and will continue to be — speaking on the real presence from the pulpit. Furthermore, this month, we are giving out Bishop Robert Barron’s book, This Is My Body: A Call to Eucharistic Revival, in both English and Spanish. There are several ongoing open hours in the adoration chapel for anyone who wants to spend some time with our Lord.
One of the newest opportunities to further engage us in the revival here at Our Lady of Hope is through a study on the Eucharist.
“Our Lady of Hope’s Faith Formation Committee planned this series on the Eucharist,” Julie says. “Our role is to plan faith formation opportunities and seek leaders for them.”
This series on the Eucharist will run every Wednesday from Sept. 6 to Nov. 8 at 6:30 p.m. in the WC Middle School Library. The format will follow the class provided by FORMED, which includes a lecture, discussion, and questions and answers. Each participant will also receive a workbook for the series.
“Anyone who desires to know about the Eucharist is welcome to attend,” Julie says. “There will be sign-up sheets in the back of the church. Announcements will be made at Mass. It will be helpful to register in advance so that workbooks can be ordered. However, all are welcome at any time.”
