We all have gifts that can be used at the parish — whether you are a skilled musician or enjoy cleaning, you can give those back to God. One skill that doesn’t immediately jump out as necessary to the parish is finance.
But, when you look closely, it’s extremely important. We are blessed to have a talented Finance Council. Our parish Office Manager/ Bookkeeper/Human Resources staff member Laurie Elliott also serves on the Finance Council. She feels fortunate to use her gift with numbers to volunteer and as part of her full-time job.
Laurie has been with St. Rita Parish for 12 years. She joined the parish in 2009 when she moved to Santa Rosa Beach. This is a special place to her as her daughter was baptized here and received her First Holy Communion and Confirmation at St. Rita. Her son received First Holy Communion and Confirmation here. Her son is also part of the Boy Scouts and is working on his Eagle Scout Project.
The path to full-time employment at the parish was interesting for Laurie. She started by volunteering and coordinating the Parents Day Out program in 2010. This became a paid position, and she was asked to take on the role of bookkeeper, and then office manager. In these roles, she feels she has found her vocation.
“I love all the different aspects of my job, including the organization, management, working with numbers, finance and budgeting, and working with a great team,” says Laurie.
In her role, she balances the books, runs payroll, and manages the front-office tasks like scheduling of facilities, day-to-day office operations, and office records. She also maintains employee files, accounts payable and accounts receivable items for the parish and preschool. Laurie previously served as an office manager for a property management company and a beach rental business.
Besides being a Finance Council member and parish staff, Laurie is committed to her faith. There are many pieces to the Catholic Faith that she loves. In addition to her devotion to her faith, in her free time, Laurie enjoys spending time with her two children, two dogs, friends and family, and running.
“I definitely love the sacraments, prayer life, service and the hospitality of our faith,” says Laurie.
