Steven Wielenberg has always been drawn to the beauty of the liturgy. For years, Steven worked in Sauk Centre and remembers going to the 7 a.m. daily Mass before work at Our Lady of the Angels.
“The Church has always been the central part of my life, and today I serve all six parishes,” Steven says. “I have definitely grown in my faith by being at Mass every day and being involved in the liturgy.”
One way Steven has become more involved in the liturgy is by serving in the Emcee Ministry as a “master of ceremonies” at Mass. The emcees support the clergy, altar servers, and, ultimately, the faith community during all of the weekend Masses.
“This ministry helps the parish in many ways,” Steven says. “There are about three of us who serve as emcees at the seven weekend Masses. You learn the role from watching and observing at the Mass. You need to have some familiarity with the missal, the altar, and the liturgy generally.”
The emcees work particularly with the altar servers who usually begin serving at Mass when in the fifth grade.
“I try to do as much recruiting as I can when I see kids in church and try to catch them after Mass to talk about being altar servers,” Steven says. “This builds up the altar server program and builds faith in our young people, which will help their faith in the future.”
The emcees help the altar servers in many ways before, during, and after the liturgy. They help them set up before Mass and then sit by the altar servers to support them in different ways as needed during the Mass so that the faith community can celebrate the liturgy together.
“This is especially helpful when you have new ones starting out serving at the altar,” Steven says. “We usually have a bunch of new ones from the school, and I know it helps Father to have the emcees, particularly during those times.”
The emcees are also a great help to retired and guest celebrants when they are visiting any of the parishes.
“They feel more comfortable coming to celebrate the liturgy, and they know they can look to us,” Steven says. “The Mass is the same, but there is that little five percent that is different at each parish, like where things are located in the building for example. We can help with that.”
The emcees at our weekend Masses quietly help the faith community enter more deeply into the Mass through their ongoing support of the altar servers and the clergy.
“I love helping our young people and clergy,” says Steven. “As an emcee, I can help young people build confidence in what they’re doing and promote service in general and all the virtues that go with service, like responsibility, reverence, and punctuality.”
