We are often told that our youth are the “future of the Church.” But our young Catholics are in the “here and now,” as they actively serve God and community, living out their faith in a host of ways. Abigail Mohs, one such young Catholic, has been a parishioner at Sts. Peter and Paul for her entire life. Currently a sophomore attending Sauk Centre Public School, Abigail is an active member in the parish community.
“I am involved in parish life because I was taught the importance of attending church by my parents from an early age,” she says. “I always had an admiration for the Catholic Church and serving God.”
Abigail’s involvement started at Holy Family School, where students participated in weekly Mass.
“We would help with readings, singing in the choir, and bringing up gifts,” she says. “Later, I became a server at Sts. Peter and Paul’s.”
Today, Abigail is an altar server in the parish and is interested in becoming a lector. She participates in monthly youth Masses organized and is very active in the Sauk Centre Youth Group.
“I go to First Friday Masses every month with the youth group,” she says. “I have attended Steubenville the last two years and will be attending NCYC (National Catholic Youth Conference) for the first time this fall.”
In addition, Abigail served as a leader for VBS in Sauk Centre, and was a helper and participant during Totus Tuus in Elrosa. She also attends faith formation classes in Sauk Centre.
Serving her community is a top priority for Abigail. She hopes to inspire others to also be active in their faith and desires to demonstrate the love of God through her actions and service. Often looking for ways to grow in relationship with God, Abigail says serving Him is one of the best ways to do so.
“A relationship with God isn’t a one-sided thing, so I am really just fulfilling my half of the relationship by serving God,” she says. “Serving Him helps the relationship flourish. I have also learned to appreciate the traditions of the Church through the ways I have served.”
Abigail strives to praise God in daily life through Bible studies, praying the Rosary, and listening to podcasts and Christian music. A special way she strives to develop her faith is through participation in Eucharistic Adoration.
“I see it as one of the most relaxing and joyful experiences of the Catholic Church,” she says. “I found this admiration for adoration the first time I went to Steubenville. Jesus is truly there and all you have to do is sit there and be with Him. To anyone who is struggling with a relationship with God, I recommend visiting Him in adoration.”
In addition to her participation in the church community, Abigail also enjoys being active outdoors, reading, painting, and spending time with friends and family. She runs cross country and track and has participated in the Sauk Centre musical.
