During last year’s Holy Family Festival, Charlie Gerads was inspired to create a ministry that would provide men with a space to grow in faith and virtue. Upon listening to the various speakers at the festival, he heard a call from God to be more intentional about practicing the faith, living out his divine sonship as a better husband and father, and creating a group where other men could join and support each other in masculine discipleship.
“The Holy Spirit was telling me to do something,” Charlie says. “I felt convicted by the Spirit to ask Father to start Holy League as a men’s support group. I knew there was some interest in the group from my friends and other men in the Catholic Community and Father was gracious enough to endorse it.”
The Men’s Holy League meets on the first Friday and third Monday of the month.
The first Friday meetings will be held at each parish in the Little Falls Catholic Community on a rotating basis. On those nights, the evening will start with adoration and confession, the group will pray a Rosary together and will end with a meal and fellowship.
“We had 13 guys show up for the first official meeting in December,” Charlie says. “It was a great evening and I was impressed by the range of men that attended and how everyone connected. We had one young man that was 18 years old and others that were in their 60s and 70s.”
Although the group focuses on being better fathers and husbands, these are not prerequisites to joining.
“I look forward to seeing what the men from different stages in life can teach each other,” Charlie says. “There is a lot of wisdom to be gained from some of our older men, but I know that the younger guys will be very helpful in providing a new perspective that will help us all understand the cultural movements of the day.”
The third Monday meetings are held at the American Legion and are more casual meetings with small-group discussions about various topics on the faith and living a life of virtue.
“The vision for the third-Monday-of-the-month meeting is to form a brotherhood and deepen relationships,” Charlie says. “We want it to be a more relaxed environment while maintaining the focus of faith and virtue.”
All men are invited to join the Holy League. God has ordained men to be providers and protectors within our families and communities. This is a great responsibility that all men are called to live out virtuously. Unfortunately, due to our individual shortcomings and the fallen world in which we live, men need to turn to God and support each other to fulfill this calling. This is what the Holy League is all about.
