We recognize the Four Pillars of Parish Stewardship as Hospitality, Prayer, Formation, and Service. At Queen of the Holy Rosary, the Greeters Ministry works to lovingly uphold that first pillar of Hospitality. After all, when we are visitors at a parish or have had a hectic morning getting everyone in the car, what could be better than a smiling face and someone welcoming us to church?
Linda Kissinger took over this ministry nearly two years ago. She and her husband, Bob, serve as greeters at the 4 p.m. Saturday Mass. There are about 20 other greeters who fill the role at other Masses.
“We were greeters before COVID, and I always thought it was such a great ministry,” Linda says. “After everything started to open back up, we wanted to get this going again, so Bob and I started greeting when we were at Mass. Eventually, Father asked me if I could get this ministry going again at all of the Masses.”
Linda feels this ministry gets Mass started on the right foot for everyone. She also recognizes this ministry is a great way to make visitors feel welcome. It ensures someone is there to answer their questions — from where the restroom is located, to how one can join the parish.
“It’s a simple ministry, but it makes a big impact,” Linda says. “It feels good to make people feel welcome.”
Often, Linda will take the opportunity to compliment someone as they enter, and she always offers a smile. Linda even gets complimented herself. When she has been off the ministry for a few weeks, some parishioners will say, “You are back. We missed you!”
One weekend, there were some bubbles left over from a wedding. Linda greeted parishioners while blowing bubbles. She got quite a few laughs and smiles. She recalls another instance where a woman was visiting because she was spending time in the area with her mother, who was close to passing away. Linda prayed with her and spent some time talking with her. She connected the woman with Fr. Bill after Mass.
“It felt so good to be there for her and to make her feel welcome and cared about,” Linda says.
Linda would love to see more parishioners get involved in this ministry. Getting involved will help you feel more a part of the parish family at Queen of the Holy Rosary. As Linda notes, she has also gotten to know many more parishioners by being part of this ministry.
“Now, when I go to Mass, I feel like I am there with friends,” she says. “This ministry just makes me smile.”
Families are also welcome to get involved in this ministry together. Several couples have their whole family serve as greeters.
