The Seniors Ministry here at the Cathedral of Christ the King has most certainly had a very busy and eventful first year!
“We first met in January 2023 to break bread and get ideas from the seniors and what they wanted for this ministry,” says Sharon Williams.
Many ideas came from that first meeting a year ago. Since then, the ministry has endeavored to provide a space of community and fellowship for seniors in our parish community and beyond. It has hosted events throughout the year, including Rosary groups, game days, weekly Eucharistic Adoration, and various day trips to local spiritual sites.
The ministry also teamed up with the Bereavement Ministry to provide a series of educational and spiritual seminars regarding planning for the future.
“We had amazing, educated speakers informing us of the importance of planning your future, including will planning, estate planning, funeral planning, gifting, and charities,” Sharon says.
The feedback from all who have been involved throughout the year has been nothing short of enthusiastic.
“I hear a lot, ‘Sharon, we need this a lot,’” Sharon says. “It makes me feel so good to hear that. It’s not me, it’s God — I’m just His hands and feet. I pray, ‘God help me to be the person you want me to be for the people in our community, for our wonderful group.’”
Sharon considers herself a lifetime member of our cathedral. Her grandfather was one of the five pioneers many years ago. Sharon taught CCD for upper-year high school students, helped with the Youth Ministry and served in many capacities throughout the years. She was a core team member of RCIA and has served on the Parish Council.
“I could not say ‘no’ to God each time He asked me to serve,” she says.
Over 25 years ago, Sharon began meeting with a few elderly parishioners on a monthly basis. The group grew to more than 20 people and over that time, Sharon developed a passion for being with the elderly. Recently, she was asked to take on this new ministry for seniors in our parish community and she readily accepted.
“It’s just so beautiful to work with these people,” she says. “I’ve got people who just need to call and talk sometimes. Other people who call, they have a great idea.”
Overall, Sharon sees this past year as a busy, fruitful time. While there have been some challenges and learning experiences over the past 12 months, she looks forward to the future of the ministry as it continues to grow.
“I’m praying 2024 will be an even better year,” Sharon says. “My door is always open to anyone with suggestions or needs to talk.”
All seniors aged 55 and over are invited to consider attending the events and activities. Sharon is available to coordinate transportation, if needed. If you know someone who might be interested, she encourages you to spread the word!
