The Cathedral of St. Joseph in Jefferson City, Missouri, has experienced a renewal marked by deeper parishioner engagement, growing volunteer involvement, and increased weekend Mass attendance. Under the leadership of Fr. Stephen Jones, the Cathedral has recommitted itself to Christian stewardship as a foundation for forming disciples of Jesus Christ.
“Like most Catholic parishes across the country, we struggled to effectively communicate the need for parishioners to engage in an active life of discipleship,” Fr. Jones explains.
The Cathedral’s stewardship journey began under Fr. Jones’s predecessor, who partnered with Catholic Stewardship Consultants (CSC) to introduce parishioners to a more holistic understanding of stewardship as a way of life. Building upon that foundation, Fr. Jones has focused on strengthening formation through consistent and intentional communication — helping parishioners understand stewardship not as a program, but as a daily response to God’s grace.
As parishioners are exposed to consistent touch points that extend well beyond Sunday homilies — all reinforcing the same stewardship message — a deeper desire for holiness has emerged. Parishioners are hearing, seeing, and experiencing stewardship lived out in concrete ways throughout parish life.
That formation has led to meaningful transformation. A genuine spirit of stewardship has taken root within the Cathedral community, shaping how parishioners approach their faith and their responsibilities as disciples. More parishioners are committing to regular prayer, stepping forward to serve in ministries, and giving sacrificially in support of the parish’s mission.
The Cathedral has also seen concrete, measurable results. Each year, the parish offertory has grown — not because of pressure, but because people are learning to make intentional commitments, with actual giving increasing by $92,000 after the first year working with CSC and $267,000 after the second.Ministry participation has expanded as well, with more parishioners discerning volunteer opportunities through CSC’s promotional publications. These materials, in Fr. Jones’s view, have “become a great invitation for folks to explore as they discern their place in our community.” As people understand the vision more clearly, they participate more freely. And as participation grows, so does the health and vitality of the parish.
One of the most visible signs of renewal has been the growth in weekend Mass attendance.
“When we changed our weekend Mass schedule in February of 2024, our average attendance was about 1,400,” Fr. Jones notes. “Today, our average attendance is around 1,690.”
While those numbers are encouraging, Fr. Jones emphasizes that they reflect something deeper happening within the parish.
Such spiritual growth and increased engagement point to the lasting impact of steady stewardship formation — formation that focuses on hearts first, trusting that tangible results will follow.
Although Fr. Jones is grateful for the renewal he has witnessed since arriving at the Cathedral, he remains focused on sustaining and deepening that progress. Seeing parishioners grow in faith and generosity only strengthens his resolve to continue investing in stewardship formation.
“I see CSC helping us grow into the future by assisting with the continued formation of our parish community regarding the spirituality of stewardship,” he says. “This kind of formation takes time, consistency, and support, and it’s essential for helping our parish remain focused on its mission.”
Through intentional leadership, clear communication, and a steady commitment to stewardship as a way of life, the Cathedral of St. Joseph continues to move forward with renewed purpose — forming disciples, strengthening community, and inviting parishioners to live their faith more fully each day.
