August 26, 2012 – Twenty-first Sunday in Ordinary Time
Jos 24:1-2a, 15-17, 18b; Ps 34:2-3, 16-17, 18-19, 20-21; Eph 5:21-32; Jn 6:60-69
“As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.”
It is a popular verse that some of us have adorning the walls of our houses, and today’s scripture readings call us to reflect on its meaning in our lives. Do we truly exclaim this by the way we live our lives? Do we put the Lord first in all we say and do?
As Christian disciples, we are all called to do just that.
It is not always easy. In fact, living in the world where we are sure to face adversity and persecution, it can be incredibly hard. Yet, we must always put Him first.
Recall Peter’s words from today’s gospel: “lord, you have the words of eternal life.”
God calls us to Himself, to live for Him, to serve Him, to always put Him first. But it is not because He wants glory in the process. It is because He knows what’s best for us, and, as He has shown time and again, He loves us beyond all comprehension.
So, as grateful disciples, we live lives worthy of our calling — living and serving the Lord above all else — truly living out Joshua’s exclamation, “as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord!”
