In today’s readings we are presented with multiple images of a king. In 2 Samuel, we read that David was called to be not only a commander but also a shepherd for the Israelites. From St. Paul’s Letter to the Colossians we learn that the Father has transferred us to the kingdom of Jesus who is reconciler and peacemaker. And in Luke 23, we find that Jesus is a king who reigns from a cross and cannot save himself because instead he saves his people.
Our response to this sort of king is awe that he could love us so much and a determination to extend his reign so that as many people as possible can live in his kingdom. Therefore we use the time, talent, and treasure entrusted to us to build up the Kingdom of God.
